L’heure espagnole
A chamber opera. Ravel’s farce starring a lusty young Spanish wife juggling lovers while her husband is preoccupied with clockwork mechanisms. Hilarity ensues.
A one-act comedie-musicale composed by Maurice Ravel and first performed in 1911, to a French libretto by Franc-Nohain based on his comic play first performed in 1904. The title can be loosely translated as “How They Make Time in Spain”.
Sung in French with English super titles. Run time is approximately 1 hour.
La dame de Monte-Carlo
A solo for soprano and piano. In a story with a kaleidoscope of emotions, a woman – betrayed by her lovers and luck – has found refuge in the elation of gambling.
Composed by Francis Poulenc in April 1961. Text by Jean Cocteau.
